The Los Angeles Rams will face off against the Cincinnati Bengals in the LVI Super Bowl on Feb 13, 2022, at Ram’s home stadium in Inglewood, California. While the Bengals are entering their third Super Bowl after an upset win against 2020 champs, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Rams are already on their fifth Super Bowl appearance.
This is just as many as the Green Bay Packers or the New York Giants have played. However, the Los Angeles Rams can only look back on one Super Bowl win – in 2000, when they were called the St. Louis Rams.
While this is not a lot compared to other teams, it is not the worst performance in history. There are still four teams – the Cleveland Browns, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Detroit Lions and the Houston Texans – which have never played a Super Bowl, and nine more teams that have competed only once or twice. Jacksonville and Houston only joined the competition in 1995 and 2002, respectively.
According to statistics published by ESPN, the New England Patriots are the team with the most Super Bowl appearances, followed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Dallas Cowboys and the Denver Broncos. Yet, the Patriots are among the teams with below-average wins to participation ratios, with only six wins out of 11 Super Bowls played.
The most unlucky teams among the Super Bowl participants – apart from the Rams – are the Minnesota Vikings and the Buffalo Bills. They each played in the Super Bowl four times but failed to win those competitions.
With their unfortunate wins-to-participations ratio, the Rams might be itching to succeed again at the upcoming Super Bowl, but so are the Bengals. They are competing for the third time and have no wins under their belt yet.
