Breakfast is essential for a healthy diet, but eating breakfast at a fast-food restaurant may be doing more harm than good. A recent study by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine found that most fast food breakfast items are high in unhealthy fats, sugar, and sodium.
The study looked at the nutritional content of 25 popular fast food breakfast items and found that almost all of them were unhealthy. Breakfast The worst offenders were Dunkin’ Donuts’ Sausage, Egg & Cheese Croissant, which had 590 calories and 36 grams of fat, and Sonic’s Breakfast Burrito with Bacon, which had 670 calories and 43 grams of fat.
Other unhealthful items included McDonald’s Big Breakfast with Hotcakes, Wendy’s Double Stack Burger, Taco Bell’s Crunchwrap Supreme, and KFC’s Country Grilled Chicken Biscuit.

Mcdonald’s is known for its unhealthy food, but some breakfast options are shockingly unhealthy. The muffin, for example, has nearly 500 calories and 27 grams of fat. That’s more than a quarter of the daily recommended caloric intake and more than half the daily recommended amount of fat. In addition, the muffin contains more sugar than a can of soda.
3Tim Horton’s Sausage Breakfast Sandwich
When you’re in a hurry and need breakfast, what’s your go-to fast food place? Of course, like most people, you probably head to Tim Horton’s. But did you know that their sausage breakfast sandwich is one of the unhealthiest options on their menu?
The sandwich contains 590 calories, 29 grams of fat, and 1,470 milligrams of sodium. That’s more than half your daily calorie intake and more than three times the recommended daily limit for sodium. It also contains 33 grams of carbs and 20 grams of protein.

It’s no secret that fast food isn’t the healthiest option, but some of these breakfast items will shock you. For example, a large order of McDonald’s spinach and feta quiche has a whopping 1,230 calories and 34 grams of saturated fat. That’s more than half the daily recommended limit for saturated fat.
The same goes for Dunkin’ Donuts’ egg white and cheese breakfast sandwich, which has 880 calories and 30 grams of saturated fat. If you’re looking for a healthier fast-food breakfast option, Starbucks offers several lower-calorie items, like its 250-calorie spinach and feta wrap or its 290-calorie turkey bacon and white egg sandwich.
5A&W Classic Bacon and Eggs
According to a study conducted by the University of California, Davis, A&W’s Classic Bacon and Eggs breakfast sandwich is one of the unhealthiest fast-food breakfast options.
The sandwich has 1,030 calories, 71 grams of fat, and 2,020 milligrams of sodium. That’s more than double the calories in McDonald’s Big Breakfast with hotcakes.
6Minute Maid Apple Juice from Wendy’s
Most people would be surprised to know how unhealthy some of their favourite fast-food breakfast items are. For example, a large Minute Maid apple juice from Wendy’s contains a bad 310 calories and 83 grams of sugar.
That’s more than twice the amount of sugar in a can of Coca-Cola! And if you’re thinking about ordering something like the Baconator breakfast sandwich, you’re looking at a whopping 1,280 calories and 71 grams of saturated fat. Yikes!
