After the United States of America and China, India has the largest number of graduates and technocrats who have made a name for themselves around the world. The National Institutional Ranking Framework has released a list under the patronage of the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
The list of top 10 universities in India as of now- Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, JNU, BHU, Varanasi and Anna University Chennai.
1. Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore
Among the BRICS nations’ rankings of universities in these countries, Indian Institute of Science, IIS, Bangalore, has emerged as the top ranking university. The university was top-ranked on the basis of receiving the highest score for the papers per faculty indicator, and the second-highest score for its proportion of staff with a Ph.D. Established in 1909 as the Tata Institute, the university current enrolment strength is around 3,750 students, most of whom are postgraduates. It also commands world ranking by virtue of the best choice of subjects like Electrical engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Materials Science.
Located in the north of the city, the campus is spread over 400 acres and also boast of its proximity to other research institutes. Focused on research, around 70% of its students comprise of scholars enroled in research in Masters and Post-doctorate programs. Seventy-five alumni of this prestigious institute are winners of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology (SSB), a prestigious annual science award.
2. Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay
Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay is ranked both in world rankings and second in India after IIS, Bangalore. Established in 1958, it is sought-after for its 16 top subjects. Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Art & Design are the most-chosen.
It is also noted for its innovative short-term courses and research. The university collaborates with leading international universities to develop enriched and enhanced programmes.
3. Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee
First technical institute to be established in 1847 under British India, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, is the oldest technical institution in Asia. It was converted into an Indian Institute of Technology in 2001. The university offers courses in Engineering, Technology, Applied Sciences, and Management.
IIT Roorkee has been placed at number three of this list. When compared against best in Asia, it is placed on the 93rd position and is ranked 51 among BRICS nations.
4. Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi
Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi campus is spread over an area of 325 acres is a premier institute of excellence in scientific and technical education and research. Established in 1961, it is internationally ranked for 11 subjects, appearing in the worldwide top 100 universities for Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering as well as Computer Science.
According to QS World University Rankings 2019, it is top-ranked in India. Internationally, IIT Delhi was ranked 172 and ranked on same parameters. It stood on the 41st rung in Asia and 17 among BRICS nations.
5. Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
Located near Guindy National Park in Chennai, IIT Madras is a premier institute of excellence with a current strength of about 9,000 students. It is renowned for excellence in 11 subjects like Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science. IITM has been positioned at number 103 in Asian University rankings.
6. Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, founded in 1951, was the first to come up in West Bengal as a center of excellence to produce world-class scientists and engineers. In the BRICS ranking, it is placed on the 24th position among the community of nations. It is reputed and recognized for its excellence in Mineral and Mining engineering among all other engineering branches.
7. University of Delhi, Delhi
The University of Delhi is the largest university in India. It features among top 500 in the world rankings and is placed on the 41st place in the current BRICS rankings. Delhi University has been ranked handsomely in the rankings about academics and employers. It offers a very diverse range of subjects in multiple disciplines. It is world-renowned for Development Studies and Anthropology.
8. University of Calcutta, Kolkata
Counted among the top 10 universities in the country, University of Calcutta, Kolkata, is also placed 64th in the BRICS ranking. Founded during the British rule and modeled on the University of London, one of the most prominent names from this university is Kadambini Ganguly – the first lady physician of the British Empire. Today, it is renowned internationally for 3 subjects: Modern Languages, Chemistry, Physics, and Astronomy.
9. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG)
Established in 1994, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) is ranked 52nd in the BRICS ranking and spreads over 700 acres sprawling campus on the banks of Brahmaputra river. Housing about 4000 students, IITG has about 10 research centers and is best for six subjects, achieving its strongest score for Mechanical Engineering (in the top 200). The NIRF placed it at the 7th position and it has ranked 101 among the Young University Rankings 2018.
10. Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur
Established in the year 1959, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, is ranked 293rd in the world ranking and counted among the top ten institutes in India. It is well known globally for excellence in 12 best subjects including Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Chemical Engineering, and Materials Science. NIFR has ranked it at 5th position and it is ranked seventh among the overall rankings.
