As 2023 draws close, Edmontonians and visitors are gearing up for an exciting New Year’s Eve celebration to welcome 2024.
The City of Edmonton is hosting its annual New Year’s Eve Downtown Festival and Fireworks, promising a night filled with entertainment, festive activities, and spectacular fireworks. Here’s your guide to making the most of this year’s celebration.
Where To Watch the Fireworks in Edmonton for New Year 2024
The Main Event at Sir Winston Churchill Square
The heart of the celebration takes place at Sir Winston Churchill Square and City Hall Plaza. The event, free of charge, begins at 6:30 PM on December 31, 2023, and continues until midnight.
Two fireworks shows are scheduled: an early show at 9 PM for families and a traditional midnight display. Each show lasts approximately 12 minutes, lighting up the sky above the pyramids of City Hall.
Entertainment and Activities
The evening is hosted by Ron Walker featuring a variety of performances. Expect musical acts like Martin Kerr, Dahlia and The Villains, Métis fiddler Darla Daniels, fire performances, jugglers, acrobatics, and festive carolers. City Hall Plaza also offers ice skating with music by DJ Busyrawk, with free skate rentals available.
Food and Warmth
Food trucks, including Soner Donair and Tiramisu Bistro, will serve warm meals and snacks. L’Espresso Organic Café will offer drinks, baked goods, and live music. City Hall will not be open to the public, but warming stations are available at the Art Gallery of Alberta and the Winspear Centre, featuring art programming and live music.
Explore the Moongarden art installation at Churchill Square and City Hall Plaza, and join the countdown to the New Year with Mayor Amarjeet Sohi at midnight.
Weather and Accessibility
Be aware that high winds or severe weather may affect some outdoor activities. Several road and sidewalk closures will be in place for the event, and public transit will be free from 6 PM on December 31 until 3 AM on January 1. City Hall Parkade will be closed. Still, parking is available at the Canada Place Parkade and the Stanley A. Milner Library Parkade.
Celebrating at ICE District Plaza
For an alternative celebration, head to ICE District Plaza. Starting at 5 PM, a Molson Oilers Game Day live watch party will precede a New Year’s Eve party with Canadian country music, countdown screens, and midnight fireworks. Admission is free, but early arrival is recommended due to limited space.
Edmonton’s New Year’s Eve celebrations offer something for everyone, from family-friendly activities to lively music and stunning fireworks. Whether at Sir Winston Churchill Square or the ICE District Plaza, the night promises to be a memorable start to 2024.
